Fabulous RangeAug 08, 2010 I received this monitor as part of my baby registry in February 2009. It is now August 2010 and I still love this monitor. I have had some issues with lines appearing in the monitor, but that didn't start until about 2 months ago. But, after I turned off the monitor and turned it back on, the lines disappeared. The range, sound, static (there is none) and audio on this product are by far the best I have ever encountered.
Not realizing I could take the camera and monitor with me on vacation, I bought a Summer "Close2You Cordless Audio Monitor" model 02700. This monitor is awful! The large baby monitor takes 6 D batteries and dies after 6 hours which means, when you child takes 3 naps in a day, you need 6 batteries for each day of your 7 day trip. Or, you can choose to plug in the baby monitor and go wireless with the parent monitor. Sounds great except the parent monitor takes a special battery that is $10.00 and it goes bad within 24 hours. The range on the Summer version is also awful.
To take the monitor with you on vacation, pop the camera off the stand. There is a plug that separates the long stand to the wall. Just unplug the long portion and plug the camera directly into the wall cord. Essentially, the camera comes apart in 3 sections. Section 1 is the camera, Section 2 is the pole and Section 3 is the plug. Plug Section 1 (camera) into Section 3 (plug) to take with you. It's still portable!
Comparing the Safety 1st and the Summer, I love the Safety 1st. I live in a neighborhood where the neighbors in the cul-de-sac sit outside in the middle of the road with a fire pit and hang out. We have taken the parent monitor on the AAA batteries with us, and have had zero static and a fabulous range. I don't know officially if I've gone 400 feet like it advertises, but I've gone to the neighbors house which is probably about 200 - 300 feet away without any problem.
The camera, if not placed near the crib, will fade to be too dark. It's a night camera and night cameras need to "see" something. This camera is not the highest quality compared to a camera you would see in a commercial building. However, keep in mind this is for residential use. Residential quality and Commercial quality are completely different. If you want a camera that can be mounted 10 feet away and still see your crib, go see a locksmith and buy a $600 high def camera system. Otherwise, you are going to be stuck with a residential quality camera when buying a "baby monitor".
I love this camera system! The parent hand held takes AAA batteries. To save the batteries, we take them out when we aren't sitting outside away from the house. At night, we have it plugged in to the wall. The audio on both the video monitor and the audio monitor can be adjusted. The video monitor will remain at the same audio setting as when you turned it off because the audio portion has a dial to set the audio and to turn the video portion on/off you hit a button on the top. The video monitor can also be adjusted so you can have audio only, video only (turn down the volume), or both video and audio. The audio only monitor has 1 spin dial to turn it on. When you turn it on, you also adjust the audio sound to as high or low as you wish. If you crank the volume as high as it goes on the audio only monitor, it's actually so high you can barely sleep if you baby coo's in the night. This can be a good thing for parents who want to hear everything though. For those who want to hear only cries in the night, you can adjust the volume lower and still hear everything. Overall, very pleased with this product.
Video screen stopped working after 18 monthsJul 22, 2010 We have loved the system until now! Woke up this morning and the video screen was black with a single line in the center! The audio still works, but after 18 months I've become attached to being able to see what my daughter is doing in her crib!
I'm very disappointed that this product pooped out in only a year and a half.

Not a good product!Sep 24, 2009 I got this monitor without researching it. The one I purchased audio did not work on the tv monitor, The tv has a decent picture though it does get lines on it some. The audio receiver worked fine, though not great battery life. I had to have both video and audio receivers together to use the tv. I called the manufactor and they sent me a whole new system. The plug to the NEW tv monitor didn't work. I called again and they sent me a new plug. The TV works better then the last but it only picks up on the loud cries, not the fussing before that. So I still have to use the audio receiver with the tv, at least they sent me an extra audio receiver. Overall, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. The range is fine in our two story house, but it does have static some, normally repositioning the receiver fixes that.
